LIVE-IN CAREGIVER PROGRAM
The Live-in Caregiver Program allows professional caregivers to work in Canada. Caregivers are individuals who are qualified to work without supervision in a private household providing care for children, elderly persons or people who have disabilities. The live-in caregiver must live in the employer's home.
Human Resources and Skills Development Canada has acknowledged the shortage of caregivers in this country and has recently waived the requirement for the Canadian employers of foreign care- givers to provide the efforts of hiring within the Canadian labor market.
The process of bringing a foreign caregiver to work for a Canadian family is a two staged process, where the first stage involves the Canadian prospective employer's application for foreign live-in-caregiver, which has to be submitted and approved by the respective department of HRSDC ( Human Resources Services and Development Canada) and the second stage - the application for work permit, which is brought by the foreign caregiver to the Canadian Visa Mission responsible for the care-giver's country of citizenship or legal permanent residence.
If you want to hire a live-in caregiver who suits your needs, we can take care of all documentation work for you and assure that the caregiver chosen by you starts carrying out her or his job duties as soon as possible. If you want to be hired as a live-in caregiver and have found an employer in Canada, there are four main requirements you should know about:
- You must have successfully completed the equivalent of a Canadian high school education.
- You must have six months of full-time training in a classroom setting or twelve months of full-time paid employment, including at least six months of continuous employment with one employer in a field or occupation related to the job you are seeking as a live-in caregiver. You may also have completed your training as part of your formal education. This experience must have been obtained within the three years immediately prior to the day on which you submit an application for a work permit.
- You must be able to speak, read and understand either English or French at a level that allows you to function independently in a home setting.
- You must have a written employment contract between you and your future employer. The contract defines your job duties, hours of work, salary and benefits.
